Samuel Osborn-9782's family has been subject of much confusion. Dr. Charles E. Banks, in volume III of his history of Martha's Vineyard, states that Samuel Osborn-12023(marr. Keziah Butler) was born about 1711 was probably son of Samuel Osborn-9782 by Mercy Norton. It is also known though that Samuel Osborn-9782 was married to Jedidah Smith on 1 Jan 1710. Consequently some people have evidently decided that Dr. Banks was simply mistaken as to the identity of Samuel Osborn-12023's mother and that Jedidah Smith was the mother of Samuel Osborn-12023.

What I've found is that Samuel Osborn-9782 and Jedidah Smith did have a son Samuel Osborn-9793, but Samuel Osborn-9793 was married to a Margaret Briant and died in Boston about 1753, so couldn't be the same person as Samuel Osborn-12023 who married Keziah Butler. I have also found though that Samuel Osborn-9782 was sued in 1711 by Mercy Norton who claimed that Samuel Osborn-9782 was father of her child. Samuel Osborn-9782 was convicted of being the father of Mercy Norton's child and ordered to pay child support.

The library of the New England Historic Genealogical Society(NEHGS) has the manuscript of volume III of Dr. Charles E. Banks' history of Martha's Vineyard. The manuscript(Mss A B32) is titled "Settlers of Martha's Vineyard" and contains much information not included in the published history. A note in Osborn section of the manuscript reads "Dukes Co. Court Rec., 1711. Samuel Osborn convicted of being the father of an illegitimate child born of the body of Mercy Norton. Ordered to pay the mother 1/6 per week until the child be three years of age and thereafter for four years 1/- per week." A letter contained in the manuscript from Wm. C. Smith (author of a history of Chatham, MA) reads "Chatham, Massachusetts July 29th, 1918. Dear Doctor: Thank you for the payment for Part III record. There was no doubt a Samuel Osborn of Edgartown who claimed to be son of the Rev. Samuel. Very likely he may have been. It is curious, however, that Rev. Samuel had a legitimate son Samuel whom he mentions in one of his letters as the recipient of land in Dartmouth from him (page 312 to 22) and who died in Boston, (estate settled there in 1753) leaving an interest in said lands. The Osborn r---e still remains something of a ridelle. Your -- -t Wm. C. Smith".

So is clear that Samuel Osborn-9782 did have a son Samuel-9793 by his 1st wife Jedidah Smith, but Samuel Osborn-9793 was married to Margaret Briant. Samuel Osborn-9782 was also the father by Mercy Norton of an illegitimate child, this child most likely being Samuel Osborn-12023 who was married to Keziah Butler.
