Commentary on Jedediah Osborn-8534 and his family
Jedediah Osborn-8534's family is incompletely known. Children known by name
from Jedediah's will are Jacob, Isaac, and John. Not all the children are
known from baptismal records -- the older children were not baptized as
children as evidenced by son Jacob being baptized as an adult -- and some of
the younger children were only referenced as son or daughter in the baptismal
records. This leaves open the possibility of additional older children in
the family and the identity of younger children in question. Note: Jedediah
Osborn-8534's will makes reference to "my surviving children not before
mentioned" -- so there are undoubted additional children not explicitly named
in the will.
Here is what is known of each of Jedediah's known children:
- Jacob
Jacob is named in Jedediah's will. Jedediah left Jacob and undivided
half of his land and half of the windmill. Jacob was baptized as an
adult.
- Jedediah
Jedediah Jr. was killed accidentally in 1772, so is not mentioned in his
father's will. There is no record of a baptism for Jedediah Jr. His
death on 30 Nov 1772 may have have been what prompted the baptism of
Jedediah Sr.'s remaining minor children on 17 Dec 1772.
- Isaac
Jedediah Sr. in his will left the other undivided half of his land and
windmill to Isaac. Isaac is known to have moved to Winslow, ME as in
1789 Isaac "of Winslow, in the county of Lincoln, Massachusetts" sold his
undivided share of the land and windmill (published East Hampton town
records, vol. 4).
- Ephraim
Ephraim was not named in Jedediah Sr.'s will and there is no baptismal
record for Ephraim which would identify him as being Jedediah's son.
Ephraim was a close neighbor of Isaac's in Winslow, ME (1790 census) and
was married to Lydia Wyman, sister of Isaac's wife Sarah Wyman. In
addition, one of Ephraim's sons was named Jacob and another Josiah.
- Jonathan
Jonathan was a near neighbor of Isaac and Ephraim in Winslow, ME (1790
census). He is not named in Jedediah Sr.'s will though. As Jonathan was
born sometime between 1756 and 1774 (from census records), Jonathan could
very well be one of the sons baptized 17 Dec 1772 whose name was not
recorded.
- Josiah
Josiah is not named in Jedediah Sr.'s will. He was baptized 3 Apr 1777.
It seems very likely that he was born after 1772, otherwise he should have
been baptized with the other children on 12 Dec 1772. As Josiah was
baptized the day after his mother's death, perhaps Josiah was a newborn
when he was baptized. Some people believe that Josiah Osborn of
Southbury, Litchfield Co., CT (believed to have been born on Long Island)
is Jedediah Sr.'s son Josiah. This seems very unlikely to me, as the 1800
census for Southbury shows Josiah Osborn of Southbury to be much older.
