Commentary on John Proctor Osborn and his family
John P. Osborn-8965 was enumerated in the 1820 census in Charlestown,
Middlesex Co., MA, but had died by 1830 when his wife Nancy was
enumerated the census in Charlestown that year. He died without
leaving any kind of probate record. Births of his children were not
recorded, meaning the only postive information regarding his children
is from the death records of his known children. The 1820 and 1830
census records would indicate the probability of additional children
besides these shown here. Below is what is known about his known
children Rebecca W., Maria, Edward H. and Nancy:
- Nancy
Nancy's death record is the only record of the four known children
which gives the maiden name of their mother. The record also shows
that Nancy was born in Salem (Essex Co.), MA. The 1820 census
shows that her father living in Charlestown, Middlesex Co., MA,
so we know that by then John P. Osborn's family had moved from
the Danvers/Salem, Essex Co., MA area to Charlestown.
- Rebecca W.
Rebecca's death record gives her birthplace as Danvers (Essex Co.),
MA. Her parent's names are given (although not her mother's maiden
name), positively showing she belongs in John P. Osborn's
family.
- Maria
Maria's death record gives her father's name only as "Osborn".
Her mother's given name "Nancy" is given without any surname.
Still, Maria's birthplace is given and Maria was born in Salem.
As John P. and Nancy/Anna Osborn's family was the only family
from the Danvers/Salem area to the Charlestown area and which
the mother's name was Nancy or Anna, we known that Maria is a
child of John P. Osborn.
- Edward H.
I currently have no direct evidence connecting Edward H. Osborn as
a child of John P. Osborn. At the time of Edward's death,
information regarding the parents was not routinely recorded in
death records. Edward H. Osborn did however marry Mary Ann
Crossman, known to be sister of Lloyd Crossman, husband of Nancy
Osborne. This makes it very highly likely that Edward H. Osborn
is Nancy's brother.
In 1840, Lloyd Crossman (Nancy's husband) and James Luke (Maria's
husband) are recorded on the same page of the census, living in
Cambridge. Also recorded on this same page is the name of Joseph
Osborn. Joseph Osborn is known to be a son of Obadiah Osborn[#11272]
of Sudbury, Middlesex Co., MA. The detail's of Obadiah's family are
well known and there is no connection between Obadiah's family and
John P. Osborn. It is just a very unusual coincidence that Joseph
Osborn lived near Lloyd Crossman and James Luke in 1840.
