The earliest published information I have found on the Sherrills comes from Captain William Sherrill Son of Adam and Elizabeth and Some of Their Descendants, published in 1981 by William Andrew Sherrill. The family group sheets contained in the book were typed in 1968. In his family group sheets, William A. Sherrill does provide some "source" information, but these sources do not give information on these women or I have not been able to trace the source so far.
Still, it does seem likely to me that these women were in fact Osborns. Neither William A. Sherrill's book, nor any of the Sherrill researchers that I have corresponded with, have had a clue about the Osborns coming down from Baltimore/Harford Co., MD. So the information that these women were Osborns isn't from genealogical research. There must be some family tradition or old family letters that provides this information. The information on births I believe comes from presumptions regarding their marriages to their respective husbands. Sarah, Susannah, and Martha Osborne are all shown as the first and only wives of their respective husbands -- this without any actual marriage information. So how do the Sherrill researchers know Sarah, Susannah, and Martha weren't second wives?
Information on Susannah Osborne, wife of Joshua White Sherrill seems particularly suspect. William A. Sherrill, and most of the GEDCOMs found on the Internet, give Susannah's birth as being about 1762 -- this despite the fact that "Joshua and Susannah's" first child Jesse was born in 1775. I don't quite think so. Either Susannah is not Joshua White Sherrill's first wife and not mother of Jesse, or Susannah was born far before 1762. Some of the GEDCOMs found on the Internet give a birth year of about 1752. If a birth year of about 1752 for Susannah could be verified, there would be great implications. For if Susannah was born about 1752, then she would most likely be Susanna Osborn[#1670], daughter of William Osborn-841 -- Benjamin Osborn-827's other sons did not have a daughter Susanna born about that time, except for maybe James Osborn[#845], who was only 22 in 1751 and whose marital status is uncertain and children are totally unknown. Also to be mentioned is that Joshua White Sherrill and wife Susannah were parents of James Sherrill who married an Osborn, given name not stated. Supposedly, James Sherrill and this Osborn girl were cousins. What kind of cousin is not stated.
William Osborn-750 was a veteran of the War of the Revolution. His pension papers give many details on his family, including family information recorded in the Family Bible. He moved to Fountain Co., IN in the mid-1830's. By 1850 his son Abner Osborn-692 had moved to Daviess Co., MO. He lived in the same vicinity of Daviess Co., MO as the sons of John Osborn-6074. It seems likely that John Osborn-6074 and William Osborn-750 were brothers.
Very interestingly, William Osborn-750's daughter Margaret married James Sherrill. This would have to be the James Sherrill that was son of Joshua White and Susannah (Osborne) Sherrill mentioned above. As mentioned above, the story is that James Sherrill married a cousin. If James Sherrill and Margaret Osborn were 1st cousins, then William Osborn-750 would be a son of William Osborn-841 and Margaret Lyall. This possibility seems greater knowing that one of William Osborn-750's sons was named Reuben Lyle Osborn.
Benjamin Osborn-7146's oldest son was named John Lyle Osborn. This indicates a possible connection to William Osborn-841 and his wife Margaret Lyall. William Osborn-841 was living in Abbeville Co., SC in 1790 with 3 sons age 16 or greater. Benjamin Osborn-7146 was most probably married to Leah Stark in Abbeville Co., SC.
James Osborn died in 1804. His wife subsequently married to Abram Johns and was part of the move by many Scott Countians to eastern IN. Elizabeth and her son John Osborn are found in Hancock Co., IN in 1850.
