Comments
Bartholomew Osborn-2685 and Thomas Osburn-2148 were early residents of Sumner
Co., TN. According to information found in biographies found in county
histories, their father was a Benjamin Osborn. They also had connections to
a family, the Stalcups, with known connections to Orange Co., NC. From
letters written by James Ozburn-6556, a Loyalist during the Revolution, we
know that Benjamin Osborn-843 was a resident of Orange Co., NC. Benjamin
Osborn-843 is a known son of Benjamin and Sarah Osborn of Baltimore/Harford
Co., MD.
The evidence regarding the identity of Benjamin Osborn-2827's children:
- Bartholomew
Benjamin Osborn is mentioned as father in a biography of Bartholomew's son
Benjamin Ozbun-2691. The biographies published in the old county histories
are notorious for mistakes, especially information regarding previous
generations, military service of the family, etc. The biography of
Benjamin Ozbun-2691 in particular has a known error as it states that for
a number of years after leaving NC, the Osborns were residents of Bourbon
Co., KY. Bourbon Co., KY tax records however show that Benjamin's family
never resided there, although the tax records for neighboring Madison Co.,
KY show Benjamin and family as residents of that county. While Benjamin
Ozbun-2691's biography has problems, the tax records of Madison Co., KY
do show Bartholomew in association with a Benjamin Osborn. In fact, the
1804 tax book for Madison Co., KY shows two Benjamin Osborns, making it
highly likely that one of these Benjamins is indeed Bartholomew's father.
- Catherine and Thomas
An article published in the 21 Feb 1902 issue of newpaper The Bloomfield
News, "Some Reminiscences of James C. Osburn", states that Catherine
Osborn-10728 was sister of Bartholomew and Thomas Osborn. The article is
principally about James C. Osburn, known to be son of John and Mary Jane
(Shepperd) Osborn, John being son of Bartholomew Osborn-2685. The article
clearly has some problems, as in one place it correctly refers to James C.
Osburn being son of John who was son of Bartholomew and in another place it
refers to Thomas Osborn being grandfather of James C. Osburn. Catherine's
first child, James Stalcup, is reported as being born in 1786, making it
likely that Catherine was born 1769 or earlier. Benjamin Osborn-843,
regarded as most likely father of Benjamin Osborn-2827, was born in 1726,
so was at most 43 when Catherine was born. If Catherine was born much
before 1769, then is becomes questionable whether she is actually daughter
of Benjamin Osborn-2827, maybe actually being sister of Benjamin
Osborn-2827.
- John
John Osborn-2686 first appears in the Madison Co., KY tax records in 1800.
This is the year after Benjamin Osborn first appears in the Madison Co.,
KY tax records. It is unclear whether perhaps John moved to Madison Co.
a year after his father or whether John became 21 about 1800. The one
thing that is clear is that John was 21 by 1800, making his birth year
prior to 1780. I have been unable to locate any census record which would
give a better idea of when John was born. John was married in 1810, so
was at least 30 when married. It would seem likely that John would not
have been born much before 1780, making it likely that he is son of
Benjamin Osborn-2827, rather than being brother of Benjamin Osborn-2827
- Benjamin
Benjamin Osborn-10727 first appears in the Madison Co., KY tax records in
1804. This makes it likely that he was born about 1783 and unlikely to be
anything other than a son of Benjamin Osborn-2827.
