"The Dawson family. John Crook's family bible states that he md Nancy,
born Feb. 15, 1789, third child of John and Hannah Dawson. John Dawson
died intestate in Meade Co., Ky., prior to Apr. 1, 1826. Besides Nancy
they had also James Dawson who md Jemima, daughter of Thomas and
Elizabeth McCarty; Middleton Dawson md Nancy, daughter of Thomas and
Elizabeth McCarty; Artimesia Dawson md Enos Orear McCarty, son of
Cornelius and Susannah; Rachel Dawson md Thomas Bennet; Priscilla
Dawson md Josiah Watts, and David M. Dawson, deceased before Mch. 6,
1837; and as his share was one-eighth part of the estate of John Dawson,
there was probably another child whose name is lost. In Meade Co., Ky.,
in Oct., 1846, Priscilla Watts and Artimesia McCarty were proved to be
the daughters of John Dawson, deceased, so as to enable them to be the
beneficiaries of the estate of George Vanlandigham [sic], deceased,
late of Woodford Co., Ky., according to his will."

BERRY.
Mr. John Vallandingham died at his home here Sunday morning, after an
illness of eight years, having been a sufferer from paralysis all these
years. Last week he grew worse and was called beyond. He was a veteran of
the Civil War, and was 78 years of age. Had been married twice. Three sons
of the first wife and four sons and one daughter of the last wife, who was a
Hendricks, survive. One son, Boone is serving his country in France.
Charles lives in Winchester and at one time was a noted ball player. All
others live in Covington and in Grant county. The funeral services were
held by Rev. Burgess and burial was in Pythan Grove cemetery. The family
have sympathy of the entire community, especially his wife who has cared for
him so faithfully the long years he was an invalid. Everything was done for
him that could be done in every way.
Bio. of George W. Vanlandingham
Hist. of Monroe and Shelby Cos., MO, National Historical Co.
St. Louis, 1884. p605
This estimable farmer and stock-raiser resides on section 27, of Jackson
township. He is a native of Kentucky, born in Bourbon county, three miles
from Paris, February 2, 1824. His father, Merritt Vanlandingham, was a
veteran of the War of 1812, and came to Missouri in 1826, living on a farm
near Columbia until his death, which occurred in 1840. Thus in Boone county
George grew up to manhood. He married Lucy Anna Carter, September 11, 1856.
She was the daughter of Peter Carter, of Monroe county, born in Kentucky,
and personated that best of all boons, a loving and industrious wife. Mr.
Vanlandingham removed after his marriage to Monroe county, and purchased a
tract of raw land and began a course of improvement which has made it one of
the most valuable farms in this section of the State. It consists of 240
acres, well fenced and cultivated. From the start he was successful, as he
understood his business and allowed no opportunity to pass for increase of
his resources. His wife has borne him six children: Thomas J., William H.,
George W., Jr., Mary E., all happily married; James M. and Almeda A. He
was captain of the militia under Gov. Edward for four years during the war.
Bio. of William H. Vanlandingham
History of Marion County, Missouri, 1884. p624
Prominent on the record of well-known and distinguished pioneer settlers
of Marion county, stands the name of William H. Vanlandingham. He was born
in Warren county, Kentucky, October 10, 1817, and in the next year was
brought by his parents to Marion county. He grew up amid the primitive
surroundings and meager advantages of those times. His friends and playmates
in the early days were Indian youths, with whom he learned to shoot and hunt
and fish with the best of them. At the time his father came to Missouri
there were but few other white families in the county. His grandfather,
Benjamin Vanlandingham, built the first house in Palmyra, erected in 1818,
a substantial structure of hewed logs. As noted elsewhere, Mr. Vanlandingham
served with much credit in Capt. Curd's company in the Florida War. He was
married on November 25, 1852, to Miss Sarah Warren, daughter of Richard and
Sarah Warren, of Ralls county, Missouri. They have been blessed with six
children, five of whom are now living, honorable representatives of a worthy
father and mother. Mr. Vanlandingham attended the first school that was ever
taught in Marion county. He has lived to see the county develop from a wild
uncultured land, into busy towns and well tilled fields; toward which
improvement he has contributed much. Mr. Vanlandingham is now in good
circumstances, and though he has turned into the "sere and yellow leaf," he
still enjoys life with the zest of earlier days. He is a hospitable old
gentleman, with a heart overflowing with generosity.
Bio. of R.R. Vanlandingham
History of Marion County, Missouri, 1884. p710
Robert Russell Vanlandingham, a son of the pioneer, Lewis Vanlandingham,
was born near Bowling Green, Ky., May 7, 1810. When he was eight years of
age, his father removed to Missouri -- then a territory -- and settled on
South river, now Marion county, as narrated in the first chapter of this
History. The farm is now owned by Judge Joseph Bennett. He received his
education , a considerable one, in the pioneer schools of this county. At
first Indian boys were his playmates, and perhaps from them he acquired some
of his skill and proficiency as a hunter. Upon attaining his manhood Mr.
Vanlandingham was called upon to fill various public positions. He served
as county assessor of this county for four years; was marshal of Palmyra
for three years; was deputy sheriff under Gen. David Willock for three years.
Removing to Knox county he was elected county surveyor of that county for
four years; he was also a deputy under Sheriff Mike Hickman, for four years.
Returning to Marion he has been school trustee for 25 years.
Mr. Vanlandingham has been a hunter of much experience. Among other
trophies of his rifle, he enumerates the following animals that he has
killed: One panther in Marion county; one grizzly bear, one California
lion or cougar, one buffalo, three elks, one badger and one porcupine. Some
of these were killed in California. In one day, in Knox county, he killed
nine deer.
He was married January 2, 1852, to Mrs. E.J. Hollyman, a daughter of
Andrew Ray, of Marion county. Their marriage has been blessed with domestic
peace and happiness, and six children have been born to them. Mr.
Vanlandingham is known as a worthy citizen and an honorable gentleman. If
he had no other distinction, the fact that he came to Marion county in 1818
will transmit his name to posterity.
Bio. of Samuel W. Vanlandingham
History of Marion County, Missouri, 1884. p823
SAMUEL W. VANLANDINGHAM.
The subject of this sketch was born in Warren county, Ky., June 24, 1812.
He is a son of Lewis Vanlandingham, the old pioneer so frequently and fully
mentioned elsewhere in this volume. Samuel W. came with his parents to
Marion county in 1818, and located two miles south of Palmyra, but they
subsequently moved to Palmyra Prairie. Mr. Vanlandingham, the subject hereof,
grew to manhood in this county and was educated in the primative log cabin
school house of the early days. His first playmates were Indian boys, with
whom he learned to fish, hunt, shoot at a mark, and gamboled and sported in
the woods and along the streams of Marion county when it was red-peopled and
virgin. He was married in Marion county, March 12, 1839, to Miss Sarah
Mitchell, a Virginian. He built a residence on the present site of his home
in the year he was married; this was burned down in 1867, and everything
destroyed; he rebuilt in the same place in the fall of the same year. Mr.
and Mrs. Vanlandingham had four children: Arthur W., Mathenius H., Amanda
and Granville B. His first wife died in September, 1847 and he was again
married, August 20, 1850, to Miss Nancy A. Freeman, a native of Kentucky.
They have three children: Mary J., Kate and James Samuel. Mrs. Vanlandingham
is a member of the M.E. Church South. They own a very good farm of 90 acres
of well improved land, and are prosperous and highly respected citizens of
the county.
