Bio. of Robert S. Howard

        Portrait + Bio. Album of McLean Co., IL, Chapman, 1887.

     Robert S. Howard, of Leroy, has been a resident of IL since 1858.  He
is a native of Madison Co., KY and was born 6/15/1827.  His father was
Ignatius Howard, a native of the same state and his grandfather was one of
the earlist pioneers of the Blue Grass region.  He was a soldier in the Rev.
and died on the battlefield.  His death left a widow and two small chn, the
father of the subject being but 3 or 4 years old when his father died.  The
mother subsequently marr. Thomas Taylor of Madison Co., KY.  Ignatius Howard
was reared on the farm of his stepfather, and lived there until a few years
before his death in Owen Co.  He and his only brother, James served as
soldiers in the War of 1812.  The maiden name of the mother of the subject
was Elizabeth Stalker.  She was also a native of Madison Co., KY and died at
the home of her husband in Owen Co.  The parental household consisted of 8
chn.
     Robert S. Howard was the 6th child and 3rd son of his parents.  In 1848
he started in business on his own account in Jessamine Co., KY.  In 1858 he
moved to IL.  Mr. Howard was marr. 12/27/1848 to Miss Lavina Sageser, a native
of Jessamine Co., KY and born 12/17/1830.  Her father was Henry Sageser.

Pen. 202;  Howard, Ignatius -- soldier, Capt. Matthew Arbuckle's Company
  Militia;  Greenbrier Co.;  Widow Sarah (3 chn) 1786-1789

Sarah Howard, widow of Ignatius Howard who was a private in Capt. Arbuckle's
Company + died in the service of the U.S., is entitled to the sum of 12 pounds
yearly to commence from the 1st day of Jan. 1786;  Rec. 11/15/1786  P. Henry.

Sarah Howard (widdow of Ignatius Howard a soldier in Capt. Mathew Arbuckle's
Comp. on state service who died with the smallpox in the year 1777) with her
3 chn be recommand as pensioners in need of assistance of government and that
the former allowance made her ought to be continued; Copy teste John Stuart, C.

At a Court held for Greenbrier Co. 7/28/1789.
Ordered that the sherif pay to Sarah Howard widow of Ignatius Howard, dec'd
12 pounds a year for 3 years + four months viz 1786, 1787, 1788, + until
4 April 1789 out of the publick Tax in his hands for her pention allowed her
by Order of Council;  Copy teste John Stuart
Paid till 4 April '89 when the pensioner died as informed by the sheriff.

The within mentioned widow Howard is a neighbor I expect about 60 years of age
+ was left when her husband died in the service with 3 chn which she had to
raise without any estate but her own industry + the charity of her neighbors.
The oldest of her chn was a son who has now left her.  She is now very frail
and has nothing to support her and her 2 little daus., but is totally depen-
dent on what the girls get by their labor -- statement by Jas. Henderson on
11/15/1786.

8/16/1789 -- rec'd of Robt. Renick 40 pounds the amount of the within order;
Signed Mary Howard, her mark;  At a court held for Greenbrier Co. 5/26/1790.
Mary Howard made sufficient proof to the court that she is the lawful heir of
Sarah Howard, dec'd who was the widow of Ignasius Howard; Teste John Stuart, C.

I do certify that Ignatius Howard and John Shull were enlisted in the company
of Capt. ----- Arbuckle on 9/12/1775 and continued in his company until the
winter of 1777 when they ---- ---- deceased with the small pox, in the said
service given under my hand this 12/20/1799;  Signed Jas. McNutt, Lt. 12th ---.

No. 4268.  James Howard is entitled to the proportion of land allowed a
  private of the continental line who enlisted for the war...  A warrant
  issued to James Howard for 200 acres, 4/5/1787

No. 4984.  The representatives of Ignatius Howard is entitled to the pro-
  portion of land allowed a private of the continental line for three years
  service, 1/16/1801;  Warrant No. 4984 for 100 acres issued the 2/17/1801
  to Ignatius Howard and deliv'd to John Hutchison.

Court of Thursday 5/20/1784:
Ordered James Alexander Gent. to take deposition of Sarah Howard to prove
that Henry Howard is the eldest son and heir at law of Ignatius Howard dec'd,
her late husband, and that said Ignatius died intestate.

Court of Wednesday 4/29/1789: Nimrod Tackett came into court and made oath
that Sarah Howard, dec'd, a pensioner of this state, widow of Agnasius Howard,
departed this life the 4th day of this month, and that she left a dau. an
object [of charity?], which is recommended to the consideration of the Execu-
tive.

  Sir, Pleas to Esue Mr. Grooms Taylor a Lisence to Marry my daughter
  Sarrah Howard the daughter of James Howard Decest she being of full age
  and I have agreed for her to marry the said Grooms Taylor.  Your
  Complyance will much obblige yours, --  Signed Hannah Taylor

Last Will + Testament of Hannah Taylor
Will Book F p280, Madison Co., KY;  made 8/10/1835 prb. 4/3/1837

       In the name of Amen I Hannah Taylor of the County of Madison and
  State of Kentucky do make this my last Will and Testament not knowing
  when it may please the Lord to call me home.  It is my wish and desire
  that my four sons should have thirty dollars each out of my estate,
  namely, Ignatius Howard, James Howard, John Taylor and Thomas Taylor.
  I wish him to have fifty dollars, twenty dollars more than his other
  three brothers.  It is my wish that my daughter Sarah Taylor, Grooms
  Taylors wife should have twenty five dollars.  It is my wish that my
  daughter Elizabeth Taylor should have twenty five dollars.  It is my wish
  that my Grandson Samuel Taylor should have of my estate fifty dollars,
  also twenty dollars more which is in Thomas Taylors hands it being for a
  colt which he sold which I gave to him.  I also him <sic> to have one bed
  and under bed and stead, four sheets one flax, one flax and cotton, and
  t-- ones, one white and one checked twilled blankets, two bed quilts, one
  cotton and one yarn ones.  Three are gentlemans fancy the rising sun,
  true lovers knot figured counterpanes, one double wove counterpane one
  knotted and turfed one blue and white checked home made Two pillars
  and two pillar slips.  I also wish wish <sic> Hannah Hadon to have fifty
  dollars, also two beds and bed cloathing to her and her two daughters.
  I also wish balance of my property household kitchen furniture and other
  property to be equally divided between Hannah Hadon and Samuel Taylor.  I
  also wish Hannah Hadon to take care of Samuel Taylors bed and all his
  others - until he comes of age and if he should depart this life before he
  becomes of age, I wish her hold what she has in her hands.  I also wish
  the overplus of money to be equally divided between all named in the will
  if there be any.  I wish my cloathes to be equally divided between my four
  daughters.  I also wish Thomas L. Wright to act as guardian for Samuel
  Taylor until he becomes of age.  I wish his money to be kept on interest.
       Sealed and read in presence of us.  August the 10th 1835.
