War Pension Papers S30850 1760 Born in Essex Co., VA. 7//1776 Volunteered under Capt. James Buford. Jacob Early was his Lieutenant and Simon Miller his Ensign. Col. William Cristey was the commander of the Reg. James Bates resided in the town of New London, Bedford Co., VA when he entered the service. Served for six months. 10//1777 Volunteered under Capt. Thomas Cook who was raising volunteers to form a body guard for Gov. Martin. Richard Varner was his Lieutenant. Left the service in 1781. He lived in Guilford Co., NC. 5//1782 Another term of service. At the time of this service resided in Roane<sic> Co., NC. 1812 Home in Switzerland Co., IN was burned, destroying documenta- tion of service. After the Rev. moved to Madison Co., KY. Later moved to Grant Co., KY. 10/14/1833 James Bates, Sr., age 73, appeared before the Grant Co., KY County Court, applying for Rev. War Pension.
