Excerpt:
"In the spring of 1838, my parent, grandparents on father's side,
5 uncles and several other families sold their homes in Vermilion
Co., made preparation to emigrate to western MO, Bates Co. which
was a frontier but now joins KS. Four of grandfather's children
that were married remained in IL, one son and three daughters.
Father and Mother had one son and six daughters, I being next to the
youngest rode in the carriage with father and mother and the baby.
I was young, but I remember how I disliked leaving the dear old
home, my father's mill and the many pretty things around it. I also
remember the many things that happened on the long and worrisome
journey to the better land so they thought, but found it no better
except that the climate was warmer. Our little colony camped one
evening in the woods where the berries were ripe. The children went
to pick the berries. My ten-year-old sister wandered off into the
woods and could not find her way back. When she did not return, the
news spread throughout the camp that a child was lost. Fearing for
her life and what could happen cause many weeping eyes. Prayers
were sent up to protect her while they searched. She was found and
the excitement was over. In the morning the teams were hitched to
the wagons and the journey began again through what seemed like a
wilderness without any more sad experiences happening. Finally the
journey ended when we arrived four miles north of the old Harmony
Mission in Bates Co.. The government established the Mission in
order to teach and preach to the Indians. It had rather good
buildings and a farm with an orchard, but was abandon. Grandfather
bought a farm that was already improved. There was a store by
grandfather's dwelling, my father loaned the merchant some money but
the merchant went broke and my father lost his money. The merchant
left the area. One of my uncles sold goods in his house. Father
and the rest of the uncles settled in new places. He chose a
beautiful location for his new farm. There were few settlers in the
area. I had two brothers born in MO. Some four years after coming
to MO, my father's health failed him. He lingered until winter
when he took a fever and passed away. We were very sad and lonely
after dear father was no more. After I was grown, I married a man
who had lived in Texas, but was raised in Tennessee. He wanted to
return to Texas. Said his father raised him too far south for him
to like a cold country. After visiting friends in IL, we came back
home and stayed until spring. We bid farewell to many dear friends
and started to Texas. On the first of April 1860 we stopped in Cook
Co. to make our home even though the Indians were on the warpath."

Notes on David Osborn - There is a possibility that one of these
sons is a McDonald Osborn who was later a resident of Albany,
Gentry Co., MO. He was b 31 Jul 1839 in Henry Co., IA and
d. 14 Feb 1929 in Stanbury, Gentry Co., MO. McDonald states in
his Civil War Pension papers [served as Private in #rd Provisional
MO Militia] that his father's name is David. His father visited
him when he was 10 at the John S Smith's home. David Osborn told
him his date of birth and that his mother had died in Henry Co.,
IA when he was about 3 but not her name. His father put him in the
care of a neighbor by the name of Chatterton, who kept him for
about a year. Then another neighbor, John S Smith took care of him
for about 11 years until Mr. Smith died. McDonald could not find
any public or baptismal records to confirm his date of birth or his
mother's name.

Notes: History of Bates Co., p 800; First settlement from letter
written by Thomas G Cockerell of San Francisco, CA to the Editor
N A. Wade of Bates Co. Democrat. " I first came to Bates Co. in the
spring of 1840 and located at the head of the Double Branch Creek
about 7 1/2 miles south of Butler. At that time there was no
settlement to the north nearer than the Grand River. To the south,
the nearest was Harmony Mission, to the east was R Beatty on Deep
Waters, and to the west was Indian Territory. I remember that
sometime after I came, the Osborns from IL located on the Double
Branch. Others were John Clem, Major Glass who located near where
Butler is now."
A small trading post was at the Post Office Lone Oak location.
Lone Oak was later christen Stump Town. Willis B Young opened his
general mercantile in 1854 and sole editor of the Stump Town
Clipper. He was also a great fiddler. David Saskey operated the
post office and was a merchant. John Starr was a blacksmith.
D P Lee and J D Donnanhue were the physicians.

Death:
Before Oct 1856; George Wakefield killed in Cass Co., MO by
pro-slavery faction
Notes - George W Wakefield
Judy Brownback; "Wakefield family"; Foot Prints of Bourbon Co.;
Fort Scott Historical Society, Fort Scott, KS; n.d.
George served in the War of 1812 and the Black Hawk War. After
George and Joanna marriage, they made their home in Quincy, Adam
Co., IL. They moved to Bates Co., MO before 1850. In the spring
of 1854, George and Joanna moved their family to Bourbon Co., KS
near the present day location of Mapleton. They left MO because of
his hatred of slavery. He was known as an active, uncompromising
free state man.
During the first year in KS Territory, Joanna died. She was buried
in Osage Cemetery now know as Stevenson Cemetery. It is said that
her brother Enoch Osborn, gave the ground for this cemetery. She
was the first person buried there.
During the summer of 1856, the struggle between freedom and slavery
question for procession of KS was at it worst. Fearing for his
four children - the youngest five years old and the eldest a
cripple, he decided to take them to his daughter Susan and
son-in-law Daniel Francis in Bates Co, MO for save keeping. That
way he could return to his home in Bourbon Co. to look after his
farm and cattle herd of fifty. On his return trip near the KS-MO
border, he was captured by a large party of pro-slavery men. He
was taken into Cass Co., MO where they robbed him of $3000, the
team of horse, the wagon and its contents. Then he was beaten and
left for dead. However, he managed to crawl to a near-by home
where he died a few hours later. His home in Bourbon Co., KS was
confiscated and the large herd of cattle were driven off, leaving
his children orphaned and destitute. Probably the confiscation of
his home was the work of the large pro-slavery group of Fort Scott,
Bourbon Co., KS.
George's father William Wakefield was one of the first settlers to
Belleville, St Clair Co., IL [The Wakefield history documented in
"Wakefield Memorial" published in 1897 by Dr. Homer Wakefield]
George was one of nine children.

Notes: This was written about Lewis B Miller, an author. He is the son of
Henry & Lourilla Osborn Miller. Lourilla is the daughter of Joseph & Lydia
Copeland Osborn. Joseph of course is the son of Robert and Mary Osborn. I
put the article here as some proof that Mary maiden name was Price. I
believe Lourilla would have known what her grandmathers' maiden name was.

"A MARTYR TO KS LIBERTY"- Sketch of George W. Wakefield who was
murdered by Border Ruffians" by Bonnie Jean [Scott] New, a great great
granddaughter
One of the first settlers to enter southeastern KS in the spring of
1854 was George W. Wakefield, who located where the town of Mapleton,
Bourbon Co., has since grown up. He came from Bates Co., MO to which
point he had moved a year earlier from Quincy, IL. He had left MO
because of his hatred of slavery, and soon became known in KS as an
active, uncompromising free state man.
During the summer of 1856, when the struggle between freedom and
slavery for possession of KS was fiercest, a gang of thirty or forty
mounted MOans came to his house on day and ordered him to leave the
territory within twenty-four under the penalty of death. Wakefield
was a veteran of both the War of 1812 and the Blackhawk War. But
here, he was nearly alone, with few free state men in his neighborhood.
His wife had recently died. He resolved to take his four children -
the youngest five years old and the eldest a cripple - back to his
former home in MO where his son-in-law and other relatives lived.
George purposed then to return and see to his farm and a herd of fifty
head of cattle and to do his part in making KS a few state.
He had safely conveyed his children to his friends and was on the
return to KS when he was captured near the line, but on the MO side,
by a large party of border ruffians. Some of whom knew him. He was
robbed of his wagon, team, the wagon's contents, and several hundred
dollars in gold. He was carried back as a prisoner to Cass Co. where
they repeatedly stabbed and left on the ground for dead. He revived
sufficiently to crawl to a house nearby where he was humanly treated,
but he died in a few hours. His large herd of cattle was driven off,
his property confiscated and his children left destitute. It was by
many such sacrifices that KS was made free and the tide of slavery
rolled back from the west.

"ENOCH OSBORN" By Judy Brownback
In October 1853, Enoch and his older sons came into KS Territory to
present day Bourbon Co., joining his brother, Thomas, who had moved to
KS the year before. He homesteaded on what is known today as the Weir
place southwest of Blue Mound. A year later, Anna, his wife and the
younger children join him in Bourbon Co.
Enoch, one of nine children born to Robert Osborn and Mary Price,
was born November 25, 1814 in Barren Co., KY. His family lived for a
time in Crawford Co., IN and Vermilion Co., IL.
On May 17th 1838 in Warren Co., IN, he married Anna Starr. She was
born November 25, 1819 in IN. Her parents were John Starr and Hannah
Osborn, probably kin to Enoch but unproven. Hannah was the
granddaughter of Hannah Boone Stewart Pennington, youngest sister of
Daniel Boone.
Soon after Enoch and Anna were married they and most of the rest
their families moved to Van Buren Co., MO, later became Bates and Cass
Counties. Another fifteen years would see a daughter and two sons of
Robert and Mary Osborn dead and the rest of their family having moved
to different parts of KS. James settled in Linn Co., Enoch, Thomas
and sister Joanna Wakefield, in Bourbon Co. Caroline's family moved
on further west.
Enoch and Anna were parents of eleven sons and one daughter. Luther
was born September 7, 1839 in MO. He married first Margaret Towers and
second Aquila Holeman. He and both of his wifes are buried at the
Stevenson Cemetery north of Xenia. Michael was born December 19, 1841
and had moved to Oregon by 1870. The only daughter, Sarah is profiled
in another story in this book. Martin was born August 25, 1845 and
moved to Benton, ArKS, about 1870. John was born February 19, 1848,
and was living in Woodson Co., KS in 1880. Joseph was born in November
1849 and died between 1865 and 1870. Herman Enoch was born June 19,
1852. Nothing else is known about him. James Henry was born June 19,
1853, was in New York in 1938 and died in 1945. Christopher Columbus
was born April 9, 1856, in Bourbon Co.. He married Flora Bell Wishard
April 2, 1879 and in 1900 was in Anderson Co., KS. Stephen was born
April 28, 1858 and living in Cottonwood, Arizona in 1938. Robert was
born January 2, 1861 and never married, died in 1945 and is buried in
the Stevenson Cemetery. William was born January 9, 1864 and living in
Bakerfield, CA in 1938.
In 1867, Enoch and son Michael were traveling to Oregon when he
became ill and died in Nevada. Anna began living with one or the other
of her children in Blue Mound area until her death. She is buried in
the Stevenson Cemetery near many of her other family members.

JAMES OSBORN
Two weeks ago today "Uncle Jimmy" Osborn died at his home in this city.
Except for a casual mention of his death nothing has been said in these
columns concerning this extraordinary and beloved man. Many circustance
have prevented our writing anything until now.
The subject of this notice was born in 1804 in the state of North
Carolina. At the early age of eight years or in 1812 his parents removed
with James and other member of their family, into the then unexplored wilds
of the dark and bloody ground of Kentucky. Here the boy grew into man's
estate. became learned in all the literature of the times, was known far
and near, as the best hunter in the settlement, a dead shot with the rifle,
as tireless on the trail, and as unerring as the wildest redskin.
But emigration to Kentucky crowded his wild and roving spirit, and he
crossed the Ohio into Indiana, where remained some time. From thence he
crossed the border into Illinois where he tarried for awhile. Following the
wild spirits of the times he entered the wilds of Missouri, being among the
leaders, who did so much to carve the way westward for its steadily
advancing civilization.
He lived in Missouri until 1854. About this time the great question of
introducing slavery, beyond its at that time limits began to agitate the
county. "Uncle Jimmy" was a staunch anti-slavery man. The battle ground
was Kansas and Nebraska. March 20, 1854, among the first settlers to
Kansas, came James Osborne. He settled on his farm two and one-half miles
southwest of this city. There he lived during the remianing years of his
life, until three or four years ago, when he moved into town, where he died
at the age of eighty-four years. He was married twice leaving to survive
him, his last life's companion. Six children all at the age of maturity
mourn his death, Lewis, Mary, Ada, Phillip, Byron and Martha.
His whole life was one of extreme purity and honesty. He was
humanitarian in its broadest sense. No man, woman or child ever passed his
humble home in distress, without receiving a helping hand from "Uncle
Jimmy". Through the honderious times of the border contest, between Kansas
and Missouri, when Kansas under went the bloody struggle for freedom, and
during all the bleak and stormy days of the war. James Osborn stoutly
maintained his ground, advocating the freedom of the bondsmen. No old
settler is there here but that has received of his hospitality none but that
found in his sound advice, founded upon experience with the wildest
elements, a saving quality. He had no enemies, his friends were legion.

Mary Wright Osborn
Early Thursday of last week, March 18, 1909, at the home of her son in
this city this greatly revered woman departed this life.
Thus another, and with one or two exceptions, the last of that gallant
band of men and woman that were the very early settlers of this county has
joined the majority and passed the portal that ever swings inward upon the
sun-lite hills and green awards of "The Beautiful Isle of Somewhere."
Mary Wright was born in Newark, Licken County, Ohio, March 23, 1825,
therefore at her demise she had reached the ripe old age of 88 years, 11
months and 25 days.
In 1840, when she was 15 years of age, she was united in marriage with
George Knapp. With him four years afterwards, she came to Missouri where
soon after their arrival, Mr. Knapp died.
Two years afterwards, during the year 1846, she met and married James
Osborn. To this union were born six children, three of whom survive their
really historic parontage, being Lewis, Byron, and Mrs. W. J. Cox, all
highly respected residents of this city.
Early in the year 1854, with their little ones they removed from Missouri
and were the first settlers in this part of Linn County-if not the entire
county. Before the Indian title to this land extinguished, before the land
here was surveyed and before this part of Kansas had become a part of the
public domain, these most excellent people became in fact, "the oldest
inhabitants."
During the frequent raids of the "border ruffian" element collected along
the border of western Missouri for the purpose of terrifying and driving out
the scattered settlers that had "squatted" here and there along the timbered
streams. "Uncle Jimmie and Aunt Mary" as they have been so long and so well
known by that kindly appellation, generally escaped the pro-slavery as they
were far back in the great woods where the trail leading to their cabin was
as yet quite indistinct.
The humble home of this pair of kindly people was, during all the tragic
times in this par of the territory, for all the years from its earliest
settlement to thhe breaking out of the war between the states, and in fact
during the four years following the gathering place for council of the
captains of the sundry Free-State men in this and the northern half of
Bourbon County. It was more than that - it was the resting place for the
newcomer. It was the very Mecca for the foot sore and homeless home seeker
in the new land. The door of this home was never shut against the hungry,
the sick nor the stranger. The little they often had was ungrudgingly
divided will all in need, even to the parting of the last sifting of meal in
the sack.
This good woman was "Aunt Mary" to all and in every emergency. Even
where death had entered some humble cabin home near or far, she was there to
aid and comfort and share with her neighbors that sympathy, that only such
as she have to spread as a benediction wherever they are called. The life
that this noble woman led in the doing of daily deeds was in fact a blessin
to all that came within the circle of her acquaintance. Kindness clothed
her soul. Tenderness, gentleness and motherly ??tion filled her heart. If
it were possible for one ?? ?? ?? ??. It can be said that in all truth that
she was the personifcation of the Golden Rule.
In her youth she was united with the Christain Church and was unto the
end faithful to the tenets and teachings.
Funeral services were held at the Christian Church in this city on Friday
of last week in charge ot its pastor, Rev. ennefer who delivered an eloquent
and most appropriate discourse from the text :blessed are they that die in
the Lord." A large and sympathetic audience that filled the church, was
present and accompanied the remains to the cemetery here, where they were
tenderly laid beside the ashes of the father of her children, who preceeder
her "across the river" a number of years since. "And of such is the kingdom
of God."
The children and grand children of the deceased "fully appreciate the
kindness: shown them in this the hour of their need.
Respectifully,
Edwin R. Smith

"LEWIS FRANKLIN OSBORN" by Hazel Osborn Priest, Chanute
Lewis Franklin Osborn, with his father James and two other men came up the
Marais des Cygnes valley from Bates County, Missouri in the fall of 1853
with barrels in which to carry home wild honey. At a point three miles
southwest of where Mound City now is located, James was so in live with the
beauty of the country that he vowedd a certain spot of ground was to be his
when the country was thrown open for settlement, and on March 20, 1954, he
arrived at that same spot and settled. He was accompanied by Adam Poor,
Mike Canovan and the latters two sons. With their help he built a log
house 20 x 20 with a clapboard roof without any nails in its construction.
It was the biggest house in the country for many years making it an ideal
center for local activities.
The Osborn home was a hospitable place and they were the oldest settlers of
the county. When people immigrated to this part of the Kansas Territory,
many would spend the night before staking their claim to a parsal of land.
However, there were still Indian scares occasionally. Once, they took all
the cattle.
All the men were frontiermen. In the fall, they would go a days ride west
or sometimes closer to find the main herd of buffalo. They'd bring home the
winter's meat and robes for bedding and coats.
James and Lewis helped haul the bricks used to build the Baptist Church in
Mound City.
James Osborn had two wives. He had three children by his first wife. After
she died he married Mary Knapp and they had three children; Lewis Franklin,
Byron and Martha. They spent their lives in Mound City.
Lewis Franklin Osborn was born in Bates County, Missouri, January 16, 1849.
He was married to Lou Emmaa Morgan and to this union three children were
born: Morna, Hazel, and Nell. Morna married Omer Leamon and had two
children - Mary Eloise and Charles Omer. They were raised in Mound City.
Hazel married Clyde Priest and had three children: Charles Elmer, Emma Jean
and Dale Franklin. They were raised in Chanute and visited in Mound City
quite often. Nell married Howaard Lamoreau and had one child, Loren. He
lives in Neosho. Missouri.
Hazel Priest lost two of her children and the other one lives in Chanute.
When I was younger and lived in Mound City with my folk, my grandmother,
Mrs. James Osborn, lived with us and we sure enjoyed her. She would talk
about Montgomery visiting them. He was an intimate friend of theirs. She
also told about the anti-slavery officers holding their meetings at their
house, plus a lot of other stories.
