John Osburn-14553's Obituary

Obituary, Putnam County Sentinel Jan 6, 1881

"Died at his residence near Kieferville, Ohio, on the 26th of December,
1880, Rev. John Osburn, aged 79 years, 7 months and 14 days.
Father Osburn was born in Sussex county, New Jersey, May 12th, 1801. He
immigrated to Northern Pennsylvania in 1822, and was married to Miss
Elizabeth Smith in 1825, and they lived happily together fifty-five years.
In 1835 he immigrated with his family to Holmes county, Ohio; from Holmes
county he moved to Hancock county, where he lived a few years. In the
spring of 1860 he moved to Palmer, township, Putnam county , and settled
near the place of his late residence. He was the father of thirteen
children, nine of whom are living to mourn their loss. He was converted
and joined the Methodist Protestant Church in 1845, and received license to
preach the Gospel some time after. He was a bold defender of the doctrine
and principles of the church. Not finding any members of his church when
he came to Kieferville, he united with the United Brethren Church and
continued to preach and exhort the people as long as his bodily strength
lasted. He was a deep thinker and an able reasoner in the Scriptures; his
influence was good, and his neighbors all say that a good man has gone from
among us. His last sickness was quite protracted; he had been gradually
failing for more than a year, but he bore his suffering without murmuring,
looking to that rest that remains for the people of God.
The funeral services were held at the house and quite a large number of
friends followed him to his last resting place. .....John L. Kitchen"

[Note: Miranda raised the children of Joel Osburn and Alvira C. (Ernst)
Osburn. Joel was the brother of Peter, Miranda's second husband, and
Alvira was Miranda's sister. Miranda filed for guardianship in
Sandusky, Ohio (Probate case #3425). The Guardian's Bond was approved
and filed March 19, 1888. She was appointed guardian of "Nellie C.
Osburn, age 16 years, November 23, 1887, and Albin L. Osburn, age 9
years, November 1, 1887, children of Joel Osburn, late of Clyde, said

Warren J. Bradford (father and brother of Miranda's first husband,
     Oviatt Bradford).

Joel and Alvira had an older child, Irene "Rene" Osburn, born 1870, not
listed in the guardianship application. She would not have been a
     minor.

She's an interesting lady and eventually marries again and is listed in
Joel's pension packet with a new surname (Guisinger). I have a picture
of her with Joel's son Lee.]
